Skilled person can make a living on its own, can create new avenues for self and even turn events in a manner that are fruitful in life. Let us see what is skill and how much importance it holds in personal life and how the education sector contributes to skill building. This post is a part of #EducationForAll series, today let’s focus on the importance of Vocational Education and its foundation in our education system of India.

What is a Skill?

Skill is that inner talent that shines through proper training. Skill is the expertise in a particular field that comes through constant hard-work and practise. This is a valuable asset that walks a person throughout life.

How can we refine a Skill?

• Through proper insight and knowledge about the subject.

• Through determined thought and round the clock hard work.

• Through possessing proper training to know the right procedure and methods.

Role of education :

Proper guidance and training plays a major role in taking our skills to the level of accurate precision. Vocational education focuses in this particular area where students churn out their best talent and can take-up their passion as a career option.

What is Vocational Education?

Vocational education imparts its learners the procedural knowledge about a specific trade, technology, occupation or vocation especially for career building. This involves practical training and hands on learning of various skills and technology. Vocational education is also known as career and technical education because these courses are mostly taken up by job seekers to build their career in a specific field.

Areas covered in vocational education:

• Health care and paramedical

• Engineering works

• Commerce based

• Agriculture sector

• Logistic management

• Hospitality sector

• Tourism

• Home science

NEP 2020 and Vocational Education:

Vocational education till date is not part of the academic curriculum in India and aspirants need to take up the course as part time along with academic learning or full time. It is mostly opted by those who want to seek a job or to attain practical know-how about the subject. It was mostly opted by dropouts or grade 11 or 12, this made most of the students to look down to vocational education and also few felt it easier , latter is not true.

The belief of Shri Narendra Modi , PM of India shares “Skill development , speed and scale are 3 important aspects that are relevant to the present day development module.”

The new education policy will be focused on these pointers.

·      Vocational education has been recently addressed in 2013 at National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF)

·      The NEP aims at removing the hierarchy that mainstream education is considered superior to the vocational courses by stating that all educational institutions – schools, colleges and universities should integrate vocational education along with mainstream education.

·      Introducing vocational education at an earlier level of education will ensure that quality vocational education is imparted to students and it will also create an importance of labour that in turn will make them appreciate local art and artisans.

·      NEP aims that by the year 2025, 50% of the school and higher education will have exposure to vocational courses.

·      Further the industries, shall appoint internships to the students so that the skill is brushed and students are ready to face the world.

We all can be assured that in the coming years vocational education is going to see the bright light and New Education Policy 2020 plans to make the graph of the students with various colors and broadening horizons of education. Now, with the change in the spectrum of vocational education we will have people who are engineers with great culinary skills and a tennis player to be a skillful designer.

  6. This is a good concept I had no clue about. Blame it on the mugging and vomiting we did all throughout school. Yes this should be introduced to our kids. Perhaps we can start with finding places that would encourage such teachings.

  15. All across the globe (except India) the concept of skill-based economy or gig economy is very popular. The NEP has laid the foundation for this concept in India. I just hope they are able to implement the policy in the right manner.
