I stumbled upon this book on Half Baked Beans Facebook Page
and downloaded it few months back. The title of the book, always made to start
reading this book as a word Genie would take me to fantasy land. I am glad that
this stumble was pleasant one, so now coming up with a review of this book.
Book Title & Cover:
Book Title “Once Up on a Genie” by Durriya Kapaasi will
definitely makes many to pick a book and start reading as many readers want to
be in a land where imaginations have no limits.
Book cover is yellow based where a Genie is appearing from
the bottle and aback cover has main character Daisy and her best friend Darren.
Story revolves around these three characters and they do
justice on the cover page.
About the Author:
Durriya Kapasi is a Creative Writing Teacher, a foodie and a traveller. She is a cancer survivor and now she also supports and motivates cancer patients. Born in India and now she is best selling author with debut novel.
Story:
The story revolves
around Khalil and Daisy, and Darren who is Daisy’s best friend. Daisy
discovering the bottle after her grandmother death and how her loneliness is
evaporated by the genie is a complete delight to read. But how only three wishes by Khalil turns the
whole life of Daisy is described very well. How Darren who don’t want to come
in between Daisy and Jinn love but eventually falls in between is full of
twists and turns. One decision of Daisy makes impact on three lives, and how
all cope up with it.
What I love in this book:
Narration Style : I like the author has used narrations from not one character
but from all three main characters, which in a way is a different and that adds
to the pros of the book.
Elaborate Descriptiveness: Describing the imaginary land and
that too with minutest detail is what took my heart for the author. May be in
future if I ever imagine a Jinn and a Genie Land I would imagine a scene from
this book.
Characterisation: The characters stick to their personality
and do not show personality surprises, which I liked in the story. They
definitely grow along the story but stick to their roots.
Bonding: The bonding between mother nad child is well
expressed in the book where Khalil meets his mother and the tension between
Daisy and her mother is also captured in true sense that readers feel the pain
of Daisy.
What a miss in Book?
There are few angles I frlt could have been more
explainatory, as in why Thomas could see Khalil and when Khalil mentioned he is
not God and cannot stop life and death, still was able to cure Darren. Maybe we
can expect these answers in the sequel, Neverfound Land.
Final Word:
If you want to sail through the imaginary land of Genie, then
this book is surely for you. Pick this book and have a read where you feel
variant emotions through the book. For me it is 4.5/5.
