Unfair Comparison

Our parenting lessons just can’t be complete with this post on uniqueness of every child.

Every child has an inherent quality and this can be clearly seen among the contrasting nature of even the siblings. Their likes, dislikes, favourite food or color dosen’t match at all. If one easily makes friends while the other find some time to mingle.

So these characteristics is quite natural among all of us and one should respect the unique quality gifted to us.

Comparison of anyone to anything would be unjust to the other. But we as parents at times fall prey to petty comparisons when we see some other child fairing well.

We all might have heard if Neha can outperform in more than two subjects why can't you?  If your brother can draw creatively why don’t you also show some interest?

Or rather we compare ourselves with our kids.............

These kind of comparisons imbibe the quality of negative approach towards everything a child does. The child may feel depressed if they are unable to perform like the others.

This seed of comparison may germinate into hatred and anger. Therefore its important to recognize the strengths of your child and focus on refining those rather pushing them towards the things that are not their forte.

Have you ever done comparisons among children? What were the reasons behind it? Share your views in the comments below.

  1. Hi,
I found your blog on the Master List of the A2Z Challenge.
Quite interesting posts. I read a few of them.
This one on unfair comparisons struck me.
That's something we all parents tend to do; but we should never do.
We should allow each child (or for that matter, any person), to be herself.
After all, no two individuals are the same.
I look forward to reading your future posts.
    Take care.
