Book Review : Ramayana – The Game of Life: Shattered Dreams

The book “Ramayana – The Game of Life: Shattered Dreams” is the second book in series of Ramayana The Game of Life after great success of “Rise of Sun Prince” by Shubha Vilas, a well-known seeker and very motivational speaker. It narrates the riveting drama of Rama' s exile. Inspired by Valmiki's Ramayana it also entwines the poetic beauty from Kamba Ramayana and Ramcharitramanas.

Book cover & Author:
The front cover of the book strikes a right chord showcasing the essence of life. The author Shubha Vilas has indeed done a great job by presenting an age-old epic in a form that easily connects with our life. The author answers to various challenging situations in life are exuberant.

Plot:
This story showcases sacrifices by many, be it obedient son Rama for his father Dasratha or caring Laxamana who went along with his brother Rama, loving Bharata who sacrificed throne for Rama, all sacrifices are beautifully expressed in the book.  Rama is referred as ‘Centre’ of Laxman’s protective circle; if any disturbances occurred at centre then entire circumference of the circle would vibrate with anger. This evaluation showcases loyalty and love towards his brother Rama by Laxmana.

Comparisons made are very realistic and easy to grasp. The author very intelligently compared the qualities of a person with nature and lot many things around us. ‘Anger’ is compared with a flower vase, where an angry person is like flower vase that falls on someone’s foot; there is no doubt it hurts the foot, but it also breaks in the process. And desires to compared with ocean waves and death to a virus; which is one of my favorite aspects of the book.  In this book any one person is not held responsible for shattered dreams, it’s the threads of various lives’ that gets entangled.

Though we have grown up hearing this great epic and watching various versions on television but after reading the book I understood the connection of its values in real sense.

Likes:
  • The footnotes are very educative and illustrative using simple examples.
  • The crisp derivations are explained in an eloquent manner, which seemed ever fresh.
  • There are great leadership and management mantras, which we can relate to.
  • Qualities of furious Ravana are also strikingly expressed.
  • The book gives a thoughtful insight about handling reversals in life positively.

Final Word:
I came in terms with many aspects of Ramayana, which I was not aware of. Indeed a must read to refine our thought process and is an eye opener towards myriad duties and responsibilities which we forget to value at times. How one should act and stay undeterred when everything seems to fail is explained beautifully, it is guidance to the modern generation. I am waiting to read the next part of the book.
